Is commercial access control right for your business?
Alarm.com access control is designed for commercial doors with electric locks—such as magnetic locks (mag locks) and electric strikes—that require advanced access control features like card readers, mobile credentials, and detailed audit trails. This is ideal for offices, warehouses, medical facilities, and other commercial spaces with dedicated access hardware.
Commercial Access Control
Best for businesses with commercial-grade doors, electric locks (mag locks, electric strikes), and needs for card readers, mobile credentials, multi-door management, and enterprise-level user permissions.
Smart Locks + Business Plus
For smaller businesses with residential-style doors and standard deadbolts, smart locks with the Business Plus plan may be a better fit. Get remote lock/unlock, PIN codes, scheduled access, and automation—without commercial hardware costs.

FAQ
Access control installation & compliance
Commercial access control involves codes, permits, and is generally installed by a licensed contractor. Here's what you need to know.
What kind of lock do I need for Alarm.com access control?
Alarm.com commercial access control is designed for commercial electrified locks such as:
- Electric strikes
- Electromagnetic (mag) locks
- Electrified locksets (mortise or cylindrical)
It is not for residential-style smart locks such as Z-Wave or PowerG locks. If you have residential-style smart locks, they are included with Business Plus—an access control plan is not needed.
Can I install access control equipment myself or do I need to hire a contractor?
What applicable codes and standards do I need to check?
Start with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), such as the building department and fire marshal. Applicable codes will generally include:
- Fire safety — emergency exit/egress requirements
- Electrical — low-voltage wiring standards
- Accessibility — ADA compliance for disabled access
Local jurisdictions adopt standards from the International Building Code (IBC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electrical Code (NEC), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), with some local modifications. Your licensed contractor will ensure your installation is compliant and safe.
